We’re naming our baby after our future dog — but it feels ‘wrong’

A couple took to Reddit for advice about naming their third baby the same thing they planned on naming their future dog.
In a post on the ‘Am I The A*****e’ Reddit forum, the concerned parent explained that their first two children’s names were ‘very well thought out’ and that they cannot agree on the name for their third. The problem is, according to the poster: ‘The one name we really like and can agree [on] is the one we chose for our potential future dog.’
Most commenters found no issue, especially because the dog isn’t in the picture yet. Other commenters were dying to know what the name was, since it was not mentioned. One commenter joked: ‘Mommy, why is my name Furface McWigglebottom?’
The parent wondered: ‘What about when said child asks about how he got his name in the future,’ and admitted that it ‘feels wrong’ to name their baby the same name as a dog.
Apparently, some of the couples’ friends thought that it would be ‘belittling for the child,’ while some said, ‘who cares, a name is a name.’ Their fellow Redditors seemed to lean more on the ‘who cares’ side of things.
The advice was pretty much the same across the board, despite not revealing the actual name in question. One commenter wrote: ‘It’s not the name of a dog. It’s the name of a “future” dog. That dog isn’t here yet, your child will be soon.’
When it comes to what to do when the kid asks where they got their name, one user offered: ‘All you have to tell the kid, if they ask about their name, is that it is a name you and your spouse really loved. You don’t have to tell the child, or anyone else, that it is a name you were considering for a pet.’
Another Redditor added: ‘Don’t overthink it, it’ll probably just become a bit of a family joke at some point. One day though it’ll cease to be “our future dog’s name” and it’ll just be your kid’s name.’
One commenter joked: ‘I think we need more kids called Fido…’
The parent-to-be was determined to be ‘Not the A*****e’ by their fellow Redditors, who concluded what the kid didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them, especially since the dog in question is not in the picture.
